Despite its fierce appearance, the English Bulldog is very gentle and affectionate.

Quite lazy, tranquility and calm environments suit the English Bulldog very well. Even though it does not dislike playing with the members of its family, this molosser is nonetheless quite lazy.

Because of its physique, it can accelerate very quickly but its endurance is low. It will readily chase children around the backyard but will likely lie down before the end of the game.

Very mischievous as a young puppy, the English Bulldog quickly adapts to life in an apartment as an adult. It is very social and tolerant of humans and other animals. It adores companionship and will be very gentle with other dogs and other animals such as cats, rabbits, etc.

The English Bulldog is courageous, affectionate, trustworthy, playful mischievous and not aggressive. It can become very stubborn if not trained at an early age.

A firm hand in training coupled with tenderness is ideal for this breed. This dog is very affectionate and needs much physical contact. It is a family dog no matter the age of the home’s residents. It loves everybody!

Tips About this breed

This warm-hearted dog is so happy at the approach of a family member that it cannot contain its joy. Precautions should therefore be taken with children and fragile objects at the arrival of a guest or family member.

Ideally, this breed requires an owner that is cheerful, active, tolerant and with sufficient time to dedicate. An owner that is independent, solitary, absent and fastidious will not appreciate this slightly lazy pooch. The English Bulldog likes exercising but not for too long or too intensively. It enjoys gentle strolls.

Health of the English Bulldog

This dog is difficult to breed because puppies are often born through C-sections. The mother’s body is stocky, thus making giving birth difficult. Skin problems, respiratory disorders, heart disease and eye infection are the most common conditions affecting the English Bulldog.

This dog has a low tolerance to heat. Despite its muscular and fierce appearance, it is nonetheless quite frail and prone to various health problems.

Its weight must be monitored in order to reduce the risk of heart disease and respiratory disorders.

GROOMING

It is preferable to regularly clean its skin folds with a wipe, its ears with a specialized product and its eyes with an antiseptic.

Its coat does not require particular attention but your dog will love a brushing once in a while. This will allow your companion to enjoy human contact and its skin to better breathe.

History of this breed

The English Bulldog belongs to the molosser category and originated in Great-Britain. Sport fights between bulls and dogs starting around the 13th century contributed to the development of this breed. This breed came close to disappearing when this sport was banned in 1835.

Some English Bulldog enthusiasts united to save this breed by mobilizing. Mister Bill George created a kennel club entirely devoted to the English Bulldog. Selective breeding brought about beneficial changes in temperament and behaviour.

The ancient fierce bulldog became a kind dog devoid of any aggressivity. Despite its impressive muscle mass and fierce and gruff appearance, this dog became as gentle as a lamb. There remains no trace of its dog-fighting past except for its frightening appearance.

Famous national symbol of the United Kingdom, the English Bulldog is one of the most sought-after breeds in the world.
