Tips About this breed

Wide open spaces, whether his master is a hunter or not, will make him very happy. The Finnish Hound is an extraordinary fox and hare hunter that works mainly in the summer.

The rest of the year, he excels in his job as a companion dog and makes the entire family happy.

The Finnish Hound is not the ideal dog for the city dweller. His bark is very powerful and he uses it very often.

He also needs to run frequently and intensely to stay fit for hunting or simply for his personal well-being.

Health of the Finnish Hound

With a robust constitution, he is generally endowed with excellent health. He needs plenty of exercise to stay healthy and enjoy his considerable life expectancy.

GROOMING

Regular brushing is necessary for the health and beauty of his pretty coat and his ears should be monitored. It is preferable to brush him and check his ears each time he returns from a hunting episode.

History of this breed

His origins are totally unknown and his development is said to have begun in Finland in 1889 after the Finnish Kennel Club was founded.

In the 19th century in Finland, alongside the native dogs, many other dogs resembled hounds from Europe.

Around 1932, the first standard was created and later the spread of the breed was greatly aided by breed clubs in different parts of the country.

At the beginning of the 20th century, a number of crossbreeds finalized the creative strain of the Finnish Hound, resulting in the breed as we know it today.

This splendid hound, efficient for hunting fox and hare, whose path he follows relentlessly, has also become a much appreciated life companion in his country.

He loves hunting episodes, but aside from them, he excels as a companion dog. In spite of all his beautiful qualities, he remains very scarce outside of Finnish borders.
