History of this breed

The Posavatz Hound comes from a native Croatian hound whose breed is so ancient that it is completely unknown to anyone. The Posavatz Hound comes therefore from Croatia. The breed first exhibited his specimens in 1924 and the first official entries were made in the Croatian Book of Origins in 1929.

Originally known as the Kras Basin Hound, he was later named the Sava Valley Hound and finally became the Posavatz Hound. The dog as we know him today was developed in the Sava Valley, where he was officially recognized by the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) in 1955. The standard currently in use dates from 1969.

Performing on all types of terrain, he was designed particularly for vast forests and thick undergrowth. Very hardy, this excellent hunting dog is a specialist for hunting foxes and hares, but is also appreciated for blood searching.
