Brazilian Terrier

Terrier Brasileiro

Although his purpose in Brazil is still to protect haciendas, he is also very popular as a companion dog. His affectionate character and total devotion to his family allow him to enjoy the status of a companion in life, as much as one of guardian of farmlands or homes of his country. Even though his ancestor comes from Europe, his roots are more Brazilian than European, and his adopted country became Brazil. His guardian functions, well appreciated in haciendas, make the Brazilian Terrier a full Brazilian dog.

History of this breed

Despite what his name suggests, the Brazilian Terrier would not have Brazilian ancestors at the origin, but European ones.

In the 19th century, many young Brazilians then attended universities in England and France. They often returned to their country of origin with a wife, and she would bring back a small Terrier with her.

These small Terriers would then have crossed their genes with those of the native Brazilian dogs, and thus have developed the Brazilian Terrier, whose type really settled after a few generations.

Renowned then to hunt pests, and thus protect homes in Brazil, the Brazilian Terrier is now widely used as a companion dog.

He entered France around 1980, but was not officially recognized until 1981. Even today, he is used in Brazil to protect haciendas (farm), but also thanks to his great qualities, as life companion.
